Background to the programme
This programme has been in the making for 20 years!
Hi, I’m Ped, and I co-founded The Skills Lab in 2011 in the UK as a Learning and Development consultancy focused on developing personal and interpersonal skills in the education sector. Since then, The Skills Lab has worked with businesses, government bodies and charities - nationally and internationally - to provide bespoke solutions to workforce and organisation development, including consultancy on customer-facing service innovations.
With a background in Theoretical physics and then as a teacher, I was not prepared to be an entrepreneur.
Building a learning and development business requires both being good at your craft and good at business.
Even though I started my career as a teacher and went on to train in different coaching modalities and innovation processes, there is just not much out there to help turn your knowledge and expertise into experiential and evocative programming. So I built my consultancy and the programming it offered through trial and error. I would try something, fail, adjust accordingly, go on some new training, try something, fail, adjust, etc.
Suddenly that multiple thousand-pound contracts and fees didn’t seem great when I tallied how much time I spent on them.
The more time I spent on designing and developing my programmes, the less time I had to work on other aspects of my business.
I hear this same story from other coaches, consultants, and solopreneurs who start putting on workshops and programming. We often think the only way is to slog it out and figure it out ourselves. We accepted this cost for a while. In fact, for years, I didn’t see it as a cost. I was learning. But it was at the expense of spending more time on other aspects of my business (and my other interest!).
Many years on, I’ve put on programming in projects ranging from:
culture change initiatives in government bodies such as the Ministry of Justice
team development in companies like Netflix and SC Johnson
soft-skills and creativity workshops for managers in settings like Warner Music and Siemens
experiential outdoor education retreats for young people from marginalised backgrounds
partnering with boutique digital agencies to lead employability boot camps for new starters in the digital sector
supporting 30+ charities during the pandemic to undergo a rapid digital transformation as they redesigned their programme delivery.
Throughout these projects, I developed processes and systems to put on high-impact programmes.
I started building tools and templates to streamline the design process to collaborate with colleagues. Creating these repeatable systems and processes was initially a means to help save time and maximise our productivity. But what happened was that the quality of the consistency of our impact improved. I went on to work with organisations to reimagine their programme and workshop development processes using these methods and tools.
And for some time now, I wondered:
